I can understand your frustration. My D100 has a back focus issue that will be taken care of when I send it back for adjustment. The D300 has alot more tweaks and adjustments that affect the final shot that I am still trying to learn myself. I have moved from film to digital and have had a major learning curve with sharping and unsharpen mask. The filter in front of the sensor has alot to do with the sharpness issue also. I have accepted sharping as part of my work flow. Besides the NR feature, incamera sharping (which I usually leave off personally) and the other in camera features, I have been very pleased with my D300.

I am not 100% sure but I believe that the Coolpix line of cameras do not have the same filter in front of the sensor as DSLR have. But I am looking into that issue myself (since I know it does have an effect on sharpness and my wife's 5400 does do better with sharpness).
