What lenses are you going to buy for your Nikon D300?

I'm still having a tough time deciding which lens to choose:
- Nikkor 70-300mm VR
- Nikkor 70-200mm VR
- Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D AF

I already have the following for my Nikon D70:
- Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D AF (my favorite by far)
- Tamron 28-75mm
- Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8
- Nikkor 28-200mm f/2.5-5.6G (my second favorite lens)

Jim:
It really depends on what you like to shoot. For wildilfe, you will need something longer, maybe the 70-300VR or 80-400VR. For close ups, you have a choice of three great macro lenses. If you're shooting sports in doors, you need something fast like a 50mm f1.8 or 85mm f1.8, or faster.
What do you intend to photograph?

I have no problem shooting sports or wildlife with the 70-200VR 2.8 with grand results.

I was able to get a Nikon 70-200mm Vr and paired it w/ a 2x Kenko pro 300dg tc wc I use for birding. I rarely shoot birds but if I have time and friends are going ill surely tag along.

Here is a sample of the d300/nikon 70-200mmvr/ 2x kenko pro 300dg tc

Lens hopping/swapping is a fact of life for many photographers and kept under control (easier typed then done) a good indicator of one's progress. Prior to my D300 purchase I had the following: 18-200 VR, 17-55 2.8, 70-300 VR and the 50mm 1.8. All solid performers (within their category) and they successfully covered 92.8% of my focal length needs. The D300's release and purchase didn't upset my glass menagerie (sorry, that was a sleeper pun I've been dying to unleash).

HOWEVER for me, the D3 was a seismic event. Here I was happy as a hippie in hemp - movin' grovin, snappin' and even making a buck or two. And along comes Mary aka full frame. Now my swiftly diminishing brain cells shift into overdrive. Within a month the 18-200 VR & 17-55 2.8 meet an ignominious Craig's List end - replaced by Nikon's dynamic duo, the 14-24 2.8 & 24-70 2.8 (stunning performers- please go to http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/4239386_rEDFi#248048179

The reason for this madness is simple - I will be going full frame. When depends on Nikon. Maybe a D3 or it's successor but more likely a scaled down D3 (D300x?). Meanwhile I'm happily playing with the new toys (and my oh my that 14-24 is somethin' else), some regrets over lost friends (but life is choices) and when the right FF body rears it's 35mm sensor - I'm ready, willing and close to able.

I really love my Nikkor 70-200 VR! It is an amazing lens that I highly recommend to anyone. I got my from Nikon on their web site they have a section where they sell reconditioned lenses. I figured I'd give that a try, coming from Nikon I was fairly confident the lens would be fine and it has produced some very nice images.
I don't have either of the other 2 Nikokor you ask about so I don't know those lenses.

Have you looked at the Sigma 50-500 (Big Ma) ?

Like many others here i agree that he Nikkor 70-200mm VR lens is a must have. It is also the heaviest lens that a lot of photographers consider to be a, take it with you everywhere lens. The only complaint I have ever heard about it was that it is too heavy, image wise everyone i know loves it.

I sold my Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 when the 18-200VR arrived. The 18-200VR is simply superb and just what i need for travel photography. I kept my 50mm f/1.8 and my Sigma 10-20 (great landscape lens). I am still thinking of selling my 80-200 Nikkor f/2.8 as it is really too heavy for travel photography, but the image quality is excellent.
