No Tack Sharp

I returned my D300 after dreamming with it for so long!!!
It was extremely soft as compared with D70S, same lens etc.
Used Tripod, dif speeds, apertures you named
no performance at all!!
I am expecting the new one in a week

Did you try shooting as a NEF? I also notice less than optimal sharpness even with the nice 17-55 2.8 DX lens. I read about some issues with the NR at higher ISO's and sure enough, when shooting JPG's and the NR is "normal" or above, it really softens the pictures. It was most evident when the ISO went above 1600 for me. I shot several pictures of text at the different ISO's with the NR off, low , normal, and high. Low isn't too bad, but even "normal" really sofens up the picture. If the new camera gives you soft pictures, try the changing the NR as well as do a comparison with a NEF.

Was it a problem with the camera? Did your new one sort out the problem?

Welcome to the Lounge Larry, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have so far.

I saw your email about problems people may be having with the D300. I tried to open the attachment you posted, but I can't seem to find the right software to open that file. What is the trick? I'm on a MAC.

Thanks

Armando, These are not bad compared to my D200...After I turned off NR, all is well.

You may try that.
