my own personal choice for a backup camera was the D40. It's inexpensive, it's sync speed is 500, and it can share all the lenses with my D300.

Second Camera

Looking to buy a second (backup) DSLR or top-notch Point-n-Shoot for my D300, any suggestions? If DSLR, would prefer to stay with Nikon (too many lenses to switch). Thanks.

Tokina 11-17mm f2.8, I have tried it and it is wonderful. Waiting for my local camera store receive a shipment in 2 weeks. Give it a try.
