Apparently, if I'm using say the Nikon 50mm 1.8, then I need to push the aperature # to as high as it will go and still have enough light and shutter speed to capture the scene. The higher the aperature the wider the depth of field is.

if you're on a budget, then the Nikon 50mm 1.8 ($130) is a good choice. I use it for portraits and for indoor basketball games where the lighting is notoriously bad. The 50mm 1.2 gathers twice as much light, but it's $400. I'ld like to get the 35m...

If I'm taking a photo of 150 people sitting on bleachers (staff photo for a high school), how do I make sure the people in the front and back are all in focus?

my own personal choice for a backup camera was the D40. It's inexpensive, it's sync speed is 500, and it can share all the lenses with my D300.

I like the 4 different modes. At an event, i can set up the backdrop, two Sb600's on stands, and set the camera to remote control them for TTL...for portrats....all set on mode "D" for me.... then....set both modes back to "A" (normal mode for me)...

the book Mastering the D300 by Darrell Young has an explanation of what the adjustment does on pages 178-180. "To the right of the lens information is a scale that runs from +20 to -20 on the bottom. The yellow pointer starts out at 0. Yoou can m...

OK.. found the "AF Fine Tune" under the "wrench" menu on the D300. Now it's time to go look through several books and find out why anyone would want to mess with it. I shot a football game last night...during the golden hour even.. and many of the...

"I had to set my 18-200 to -20" where did you do that?

Do I read correctly that the internal facility for storing custom focal length settings for lenses is limited to NON-cpu lenses? How then would I adjust anything like that for the 18-200?

Skimming the article, i don't see where it specifies how far the camera should be from the chart or where to measure from. Should you measure from the glass surface of the lens? I seem to remember that most cameras have a line (on the bottom) that...

I have the same 18-200 VR lens on my 300 almost all the time. I'd noticed that the images seemed "soft" and thought I must be imagining it. Surely, it must be well adjusted because Nikon made both. Not so. I put a 50mm (1.8) back on and wow! what ...

I use JPG large normal. I shoot as clean as I can. RAW might save 5% of the shots I miss but that is not a problem for me. PS usually can recover I find the D300 has a great Auto WB setting for indoors.

I have never used this. I find it too slow and not always predictable. i use centre focus and the lock button.

Hi Don, Make sure the autofocus area mode switch is set to to Dynamic Area AF (Switch under focus selector, set to the middle) and that the focus mode switch is set to continuous servo (Switch on the front by lens removal button set to 'C'). I ho...

That SD cable sounds very cool. Would be very handy if your taking nothing but the same portraits for a while. Let me know if you find out what the name fo the cable.

One of the things I like to do is after the ceremony take the wedding party to a place where I can get some great shots such as a park, lake/ocean, buildings with great stone work and archways. Zak
