The Nikon D300 Lounge

For Nikon D300 owners, fans and anybody who's interested in this camera

If you had the choice of lenses to purchase which one would you recommend? I would like a partial wide angle for landscapes, with portrait capabilities. Preferably 2.8 for low light captures, with VR
Help would be appreciated. I've purchased a Tamron 18-250mm 1:35-63 (IF) Macro which gives good results but not good in low light.

Yes you do Jeff. This one will be fun! Now to begin to work on the wide angle perspective with serious contemplation.

if you're on a budget, then the Nikon 50mm 1.8 ($130) is a good choice. I use it for portraits and for indoor basketball games where the lighting is notoriously bad. The 50mm 1.2 gathers twice as much light, but it's $400. I'ld like to get the 35mm 1.8 as well so I don't have to back up so far with portraits.
The two lenses that are ALWAYS in my bag are:
Nikon 18-200 VRII
Nikon 50mm 1.8
I can shoot most things well with just these two.

Just got my Nikkor 50mm 1.8 yesterday, down with gall stones so can't get out shooting but here a couple I shot at home yesterday with it (bad lighting both inside and out).
So far I love the Tokina 11 - 16mm f2.8 really recommend it. For the price and the final product it's amazing! If you can find one

Hi all, been gone for the last 5 weeks to NY and British Columbia on a boat trip. I have to say I have used my new Tokina 11-16 extensively during the trips and I LOVE THIS LENS! It hasn't disappointed me yet in all types of situations.
However after shooting 3500 images the past few months and stowing them on an external hard drive made by Seagate. It is now malfunctioning and I can't access my stash..
Anyone know how I can retrieve data from it when all I get is the dreaded click when accessed? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'm ticked to say the least
Got a lot of photos that are very important to me don't want to lose em! HELP PLEASE

This is a sample of the Tokina 11-16mm f.2.8 which was taken during my trip to Taipei. Its a superb wide angle lens with an affordable price. I recommend this lens.

Nice shot. Glad you also like the Tokina 11-16 f 2.8. I have so many photos I took on my boat trip to BC but the darn external hardrive is still down and out with all my shots. Trying to get them retrieved at a Seattle retrieval source. Wish me luck! There are some great images to show off and I'd hate to lose them altogether! Also have some photos taken with the Nikon 50mm 1.8 on that hard drive, a wonder for portraits if anyone is looking for a good lens for that purpose. And reasonably priced
Just got out of the hospital for the second time this week, had complications with the surgery on Friday, everything has been put on hold, and no shooting for me lately but hopefully the worst is over. Have some kewl ideas for the new lenses I want to try out.

The Tokina is still backordered at many places I hear. Up to two months wait to get. But still highly recommend this lens!

Don't overlook the Tokina 16-50mm f2.8. I think it's more versatile than the 11-16. Great for landscapes and portraits in low light. Love this lens. It does it all for me. On my D300, shooting in RAW I can crop down as needed to get a somewhat tele effect. Use it all the time. No VR but when it's this fast who cares?
