Focus with large groups

If I'm taking a photo of 150 people sitting on bleachers (staff photo for a high school),
how do I make sure the people in the front and back are all in focus?

Apparently, if I'm using say the Nikon 50mm 1.8, then I need to push the aperature # to as high as it will go and still have enough light and shutter speed to capture the scene. The higher the aperature the wider the depth of field is.
